Windymains Sawmill Ltd. is located just south of Edinburgh. This strategic location is ideal for raw material supplies and is close to the National motorway network for a quick response to customer demands.
Jim Harrison, the Managing Director, has built the business from scratch in just over 10 short years. In planning the mill, he has been keenly aware of the needs of the customer in today's competitive markets. This has meant a "hands on" approach by Jim in every aspect of the new sawmill process from planning, selecting the equipment, controlling the installation, supervising the commissioning and motivating the workforce. The end result is a modern mill tailored to suit the marketing aims of the company and the demands of it's customers.
The log sorting line comprises a butt reducer followed by twin axes scanning of the logs. Sorting to length, diameter and sweep, ensures that logs entering the sawmill production process are correctly specified for the production run.
After sorting, logs are stored in stacking lanes, they are then drawn from the substantial stocks and are firstly de-barked, then they enter the mill where they are scanned, optimised into the best cutting pattern then sawn to the finished dimension utilising a chipper canter quad line followed by a triple saw configuration.
Boards from the canter quad are optimised using a Catech edger line. This line has a graphical display which shows the unedged board and the projected optimisation result. The edger can handle just over two boards every second.
The finished sawn products are sorted in either the drop sorting line then stacked and pinned automatically or they can be stacked and pinned on the second stacking line opposite the drop sorter. This second stacker gives added flexibility to the production of special product sizes.
The finished material can then be further processed as required in the moulding /re-sawing shed then pressure treated if required.
The company appreciates the need for a speedy response to customer requirements, it therefore holds substantial stocks of finished and part finished products to meet these demands.
